What demographic trends exist related to overdose deaths and overdose ED visits in my county?
Why is this Question Important?
Certain demographic groups have a disproportionately high frequency of drug overdose deaths. Additionally, overdose frequency and SUD treatment characteristics vary by demographic group. A single model for overdose response and prevention will likely not achieve equitable outcomes and progress across demographic groups.
Communities of color are at increased risk of fatal overdose. Racial and ethnic minority residents experience differences in EMS treatment for opioid overdoses and SUD treatment.
Academic Detailer Tips
Detailers should be aware that overdoses do not affect all demographic and socioeconomic groups in Michigan equally. For example, while the total overdose death rate decreased in Michigan in 2018, the overdose death rate among Black Michigan residents increased by 15 percent.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, to reduce the burden of overdose morbidity and mortality in Michigan and particularly to reduce the disparities present among overdoses and SUD, prevention and treatment programs need to incorporate a health equity/health disparities lens into their decision-making and program planning. Academic detailers are well-positioned to introduce concerns with regard to health equity and inclusion.
Michigan Overdose Data to Action Dashboard
About this Resource
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) MODA team is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) grant to bring surveillance and prevention efforts together to decrease rates of drug misuse, substance use disorder, fatal and nonfatal overdoses, and drug use-related health risks.
MODA is working to strengthen the capacity of communities to prevent drug overdoses to promote the exchange of data to support effective prevention programs in communities throughout Michigan.

Technical Note: The Provisional Overdose Deaths indicator providers a provisional estimate of the number of drug poisoning deaths among Michigan residents. Rates are calculated as the number of drug poisoning deaths per 100,000 residents. Data is sourced from the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System. The Overdose Emergency Department Visits indicator represents the number of emergency department visits at Michigan hospitals to treat Michigan residents for drug overdose. Data is sourced from MiCelerity.
